As I continue reflecting on what went on in 2018, one thing stood out to me — I read a lot more books, articles and digests last year than I had in previous years.

I rediscovered my love for fiction (much thanks also goes to my girlfriend Charing Kam who has inspired me with her own passion for the written word). I delved into alternate viewpoints and picked up authors I usually wouldn’t read.

Here I’ll be sharing my personal top 7 books (both fiction and non-fiction) of 2018.

1. A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara

I picked this up on a fellow Medium member’s recommendation, (thanks Ascencia!) and oh boy, what a tale.

A Little Life starts off as a coming-of-age novel involving four classmates moving to New York to attempt to make it big in the Big Apple. But, with its considerable length (720 pages), there’s got to be more to it than just a story about growing up, right?

Well, yes it is.

As you read on, the book shifts from an ensemble-led story to a nuanced character study of Jude, one of the more mysterious and withdrawn characters of the foursome. We find out through copious flashbacks, inner dialogues and…
